Separate One Big Content Source into Two?

Hypothetical: is it possible to separate one content source into two or more? For example, let's say we have the Carrot content source (Potato-based) is huge at 2 million items. Could we moved the ABC object and the XYZ object into their own content source? That would make two Potato content sources. This would decrease the amount of objects to crawl, so crawl time would be much faster.
